The Importance of Qur’anic Education for High School Students
High school students in the United States find themselves at the forefront of a complex intellectual and spiritual struggle. Every minute, Muslim high schoolers are exposed to overtly anti-Islamic content that directly challenges their fundamental beliefs. Without a firm grounding in their faith and the core values of Islam, the forthcoming generation of American Muslims faces potential risks. A viable solution lies in empowering each literate Muslim through engagement with the Qur'an.
This sacred scripture was revealed to a community confronting a far more severe intellectual oppression, where women were perceived as commodities and the practice of burying daughters alive prevailed. However, within a span of only 23 years, the Qur'an transformed Bedouin Arabs into a formidable nation that triumphed over the Sassanid Empire and the Eastern Byzantium Empire, leaving a legacy that lasted for more than a thousand years. The Qur'an is not simply a book to be read for blessings or its beautiful recitation; it possesses the power to transform individuals and entire societies.
Qur'anic Education plays a vital role in nurturing morality and ethics among young Muslims. In a world where moral values are often undermined or distorted, the teachings of the Qur'an provide a solid foundation for ethical conduct. The Qur'an emphasizes principles such as honesty, justice, compassion, humility, and respect for others. It teaches us the building blocks of a successful and God-centric society, one that is not focused on enriching a few through the enslavement of the masses. It rejects a capitalistic approach that requires constant growth to the detriment of the people. Instead, it promotes a society that ensures the well-being of the weak and utilizes the strengths of the strong in the best manner. It aims for human advancement without compromising the environment it inhabits.
By studying and internalizing these teachings, young Muslims develop a strong moral compass that guides their actions and decisions. Qur'anic Education also instills a sense of accountability and responsibility towards society. The Qur'an emphasizes the importance of community, encouraging believers to actively engage in acts of charity, social justice, and positive contributions to their communities. By embodying these values, young Muslims are inspired to act as agents of positive change, striving for a more just and compassionate society, similar to the examples set by prophets like David, Solomon, and Moses ﷺ. The Qur'an empowers the youth to unite for the common good, regardless of race or religion, as highlighted in Surah Al-Asr. It encourages them to stand against oppressive authority, drawing inspiration from the courageous youngsters of the cave.
However, it is essential to acknowledge that although we may recite and hear the verses beautifully, if we do not understand the language, the true message remains elusive. It is as if we have received a text message from God, only to leave it unread because we haven't bothered to use Translate. The Qur'an is a relatively concise book compared to other divine books like the Old and New Testaments. It is easier to recite, memorize, and constantly listen to.
While the Qur'an contains many examples of people of all ages, the mention of youth is too numerous to quantify. If we look at the prophets, we find numerous examples to look up to. We witness the intelligence of Abraham ﷺ in exposing the false nature of the idols worshipped by his people, the resilience and determination of Ishmael ﷺ in the face of trials, the courage of Joseph ﷺ in a strange land, the bravery of Miriam who followed her brother Moses' ﷺ basket along the Nile, the unwavering strength of Mary ﷺ in the face of public denigration, and the wisdom of John ﷺ and his adherence to scripture from a young age. These personalities serve as exemplars, and they were all youngsters who faced extraordinary challenges and rose to the occasion. Their legacy is immortalized in a book recited by millions of people daily, inspiring youngsters past, present, and future. If we examine our own circumstances, we will find similarities to what these prophets may have faced. The answers to our questions and challenges are provided in this book; it is our own fault if we fail to acknowledge and practice upon it. We repeatedly ask God ﷻ to guide us in Surah Al-Fatihah, so it is time we delve into the guidance sent for our benefit.
Let us, therefore, embark on this path with determination and perseverance, empowering young Muslims to overcome the challenges they face. By removing the language barrier and facilitating a deep connection with the Qur'an, we can equip them with the tools needed to navigate the intellectual and spiritual battlefield. Qur'anic Education not only strengthens their faith but also nurtures their moral character, instilling ethical values and a sense of responsibility towards society. In doing so, we can help shape a generation of American Muslims who are rooted in their faith, guided by their values, and capable of making meaningful contributions to both their communities and society at large.
