Raising Strong Believers:
The Importance of Encouraging Children to Fast During Ramadan
As we observe the blessed month of Ramadan, we should understand what this month is about and how we can instill the love of Ramadan in the next generation. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and it is a time for spiritual reflection and self-discipline. For parents, it is an opportunity to instill the importance of this pillar in their children's lives and help them build a strong foundation for their spiritual journey.
Fasting during Ramadan is a time-honored tradition that is deeply rooted in our faith. The Quran and Hadith highlight the importance of fasting for Muslims. Allah ta’ala mentions, "O you who have believed, fasting has been decreed upon you as it was decreed upon those before you so that you may become righteous" (Quran 2:183). Additionally, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan out of faith and seeking Allah's reward, all his past sins will be forgiven" (Bukhari and Muslim).
As parents, it is our responsibility to encourage our children to follow this great act of worship and instill the importance of it in their lives. By doing so, we are not only fulfilling our religious obligation but also providing our children with an opportunity to strengthen their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
For children, fasting has been shown to improve cognitive function, increase energy levels, and improve overall health. Fasting can also be a tool for children to learn self-discipline and control over their desires, which is important in today’s climate especially for children who are going to public school.
Encouraging your children to fast during Ramadan is an important part of instilling the values and principles of Islam. Here are some tips for encouraging your children to fast:
Start with small steps: Encourage your children to start with a few hours of fasting each day during Ramadan, gradually building up to a full day of fasting. This will help them become accustomed to fasting and build up their endurance.
Explain the importance of fasting: Take the time to explain the importance of fasting during Ramadan, such as the spiritual benefits, the importance of self-discipline, and the opportunity to reflect and appreciate what we have.
Lead by example: Children often learn by example, so it is important for you to lead by example and fast yourselves. This will show your children the importance of fasting and help them understand that it is a part of their daily lives.
Provide support and encouragement: Fasting can be challenging, and your children will need your support and encouragement throughout the process. This can include offering words of encouragement, providing treats rewards during Iftar time, and creating a supportive environment.
Children should also become active participants of the house during Suhoor (Sehri) time and Iftar time. That means that they are tasked with various things like making a popular drink, setting the table, reciting the du’aa loudly, and cleaning up the table. this builds a sense of responsibility in them and soon they will take Ramadan more seriously than even parents.
In conclusion, fasting during Ramadan is an important aspect of our faith, and it is our responsibility as parents to encourage our children to follow this pillar. With patience, support, and encouragement, we can help our children build a strong foundation for their spiritual journey while also reaping rewards with our Creator.
